Skyrock FM is a French radio station, specializing in rap and R&B, that launched Skyrock.com, previously known as Skyblog, the most popular social networking website in the French-speaking world.
Skyrock Radio and Skyrock.com are considered as two distinct subsidiaries within Orbus, previously Téléfun, its parent company. AXA Private Equity holds a 70% share of Skyrock; Pierre Bellanger, Skyrock’s founder and CEO, has 30%.
As France’s largest independent radio station, operating at about 150 different frequencies all over the country, Skyrock Radio draws in approximately 4.1 million listeners each day. It consistently ranks as the most popular radio station in Paris, and among French 13 to 24 year olds.
Skyrock.com’s success extends well beyond France, especially the French-speaking world like Belgium, Canada, and throughout Africa. With a target audience of 13-24 year olds, Skyrock.com is often described as the French version of MySpace. Skyrock.com regularly ranks among the top 3 websites, behind Google, in France and in the French language. It reached the 17th place in the Alexa Internet Top 500 in January 2008, outranking eBay and Amazon.com,[2] though 90% of its audience is still French. It is the first French-speaking social network[3]. Skyrock president Pierre Bellanger described it as the first blogging platform in Europe.[4]
With over 21 million members,[4] 5 million profiles and 14 million blogs,[5] it can be considered the French version of MySpace, LiveJournal or Xanga.
